Subtext, Harold Lohner's free eroded display font from 2001, mixes chunky serif letters with gouged-out curls and notches that feel half Victorian ornament, half damaged wood type. The font keeps that push and pull throughout - solid, blocky forms interrupted by sudden white bites, hooked cuts, and a few theatrical flourishes that make the letters look weathered rather than merely rough.

That gives this free font a natural place in poster headlines, album covers, book jackets, bar branding, and title cards where a little antique drama helps. It also works for short pull quotes or opening words, because those carved gaps and curling breaks do enough visual work before you need much text.
